Dimitri
Left for dead. Raised to life. Changed forever.
Dimitri has always been known as a happy soul in Golden Valley. A genuinely good person — warm, easy to love — who struggled, as many do in this community, with addiction.
At the end of 2024, a gang from Pacaltsdorp entered Golden Valley seeking revenge. They came in without warning and began attacking people at random. Dimitri lived near the entrance to the valley. He was in the wrong place at a deeply wrong time.
He was stabbed multiple times. Wounds to his head. One that punctured his lung, causing it to collapse. He was left on the street — bleeding, unconscious, alone — and many who saw him believed he would not survive the night.
"He believed God had given him a second chance — and he gave his life to the Lord."
Love Looks Like SomethingBut at the hospital, doctors worked through the night. And by the grace of God, Dimitri lived.

When we visited him afterward, he was heartbroken. Angry at the injustice of what had been done to him — an innocent man caught in violence that was never his to carry. But beneath the grief, something else was stirring. Through everything he had endured, Dimitri believed that God had given him a second chance at life. And so he gave his life to the Lord.
Just weeks later, we baptized him.
Not long after that, he joined our soup kitchen staff. Dimitri has a beautiful heart and a deep love for children. He shows up every day with the kind of warmth that you cannot manufacture — it comes from having been through something and choosing, on the other side of it, to be grateful and to give.
Recovery is still a journey. He will be the first to tell you that. But his life has changed dramatically. He holds a steady job. He earns an income. He continues to grow in his faith, surrounded by a community that loves him.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11Today, Dimitri is alive to tell the story of how God saved his life and gave him hope, purpose, and a future. In Golden Valley, where so many stories end too soon, his is one that is only just beginning.
